Managed server

Dedicated or virtual server where the provider maintains the OS, updates, security patches and often the web stack — you only manage content and applications.

A managed server combines the power of a VPS or root server with a full operations service: kernel updates, security patches, firewall rules, backup configuration and usually the LAMP/LEMP stack are maintained and monitored by the provider. You keep control over CMS and application installs but have no or limited root access — touching the OS would break the maintenance SLA. Typical surcharge over an unmanaged VPS of the same hardware: 30–80 %. The right pick for agencies without an in-house ops team, business-critical single-site projects or customers who want to outsource all sysadmin work.
